Guwahati: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to grant an urgent hearing on a petition seeking action against the alleged police crackdown on students during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led march in Delhi.
The matter was mentioned before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana.
Seeking an early listing, the petitioner’s counsel told the court that students had allegedly faced police brutality during the protest and urged the bench to take up the matter on Thursday.
The lawyer also informed the bench that the petition contained three prayers and that video footage of the incident was available.
The bench declined the request. The Chief Justice said the court would not examine video recordings while deciding whether the matter warranted an urgent hearing.
Even after the counsel reiterated the allegation that students had been assaulted by the police and sought to rely on the footage, the Chief Justice declined to reconsider, saying the court had neither the time nor the inclination to watch the videos.
The petition stems from the police action during Monday’s CJP march towards Parliament, held on the opening day of the Monsoon Session.
The demonstration saw thousands of students and young participants demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
Clashes later broke out after protesters attempted to march towards Parliament. Security personnel used batons and tear gas, leading to confrontations in parts of the national capital.
