Sonam Wangchuk alleges illegal detention from Safdarjung Hospital, urges July 20 march as wife seeks Delhi High Court intervention.

Guwahati: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has issued a message to his supporters from Safdarjung Hospital after being removed from his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

The message, shared by his wife Gitanjali, urges supporters to join the planned July 20 march and describes his removal from the protest site as “illegal”. Wangchuk also characterised the ongoing agitation as “India’s second freedom movement”.

In his statement, Wangchuk alleged that he was being unlawfully detained at Safdarjung Hospital after being taken away from Jantar Mantar by the Delhi Police during an early morning operation on Saturday. Referring to the campaign as a fight against injustice and fear, he said the movement seeks “freedom from injustice” and “freedom from fear”, while also raising concerns over issues such as paper leak scandals.

Meanwhile, Gitanjali intensified her criticism of Safdarjung Hospital, saying she had lost confidence in the treatment her husband was receiving. In a post on X, she announced that she had approached the Delhi High Court seeking permission to shift Wangchuk to a private hospital.

She further alleged discrepancies in the hospital’s reporting of Wangchuk’s potassium levels. According to Gitanjali, hospital officials informed the family that his potassium level had fallen to 2.9 and described the situation as life-threatening. However, she claimed an independent laboratory test recorded the level at 3.5, which she said falls within the normal range.
