Guwahati: Indian Army personnel safely neutralised an old mortar shell in Arunachal Pradeshโs Tawang district, with officials stating that the explosive is believed to be linked to the 1962 India-China war.
The device was recovered on Thursday afternoon from the Lebrang locality under Tawang township, prompting authorities to step up security in the surrounding area immediately after the discovery.
After receiving the alert from local police, civil administration units and Army teams worked together at the site, which was quickly secured and restricted to prevent any risk to civilians.
The defusing operation was carried out on Friday under controlled conditions, with senior officers from the 190 Mountain Brigade and top police officials present during the procedure.
Army explosive disposal experts later moved the mortar shell to a remote stretch in Methang, where it was destroyed safely without any incident.
Tawang SP Tasi Darang praised the swift coordination and technical handling of the situation, noting the professionalism shown by the Army unit involved.
Old ammunition from the 1962 India-China conflict is still occasionally being found in border areas of Arunachal Pradesh, officials said, warning that such explosives remain unsafe even after many decades.
People have been advised to immediately alert authorities if they spot any suspicious or unidentified objects and to avoid any physical contact with them.
The operation concluded safely, with no reports of injury or damage.
