Dibrugarh: Security forces operating in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district thwarted a major terror incident and arrested an NSCN cadre, SS Capt Ponglem Wangpan, on Friday during a joint operation conducted by Assam Rifles, Special Task Force, and Longding Police.

According to sources, the operation took place at Tissing, near Zedua village under Longding police station.

During the operation, an active NSCN-IM cadre, identified as SS Capt Ponglem Wangpan (35), son of Lt. Ajong Wangpan of Longsom village in Longding was apprehended.

Security forces recovered one 5.56 mm INSAS rifle, one 9mm pistol, one INSAS magazine, one pistol magazine, 18 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition, and two 9mm rounds.

“Ponglem Wangpan was leading a team of four members. The group had come to Longding with the intention to kidnap or kill an undisclosed target. However, due to the swift action of the joint security forces, the terror plot was thwarted, averting a potential incident,” officials said.

An FIR has been lodged at Longding Police Station, vide LDG PS Case No. 08/26 under Sections 25(1A)/27 read with Sections 10/13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAP(A)), and the matter has been taken up for further investigation.

Security forces are continuing combing and search operations in other locations.
