Guwahati: Senior leader Chandan Brahma has resigned from the United Peopleโs Party Liberal (UPPL), delivering a setback to the party as Assam prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Brahma submitted his resignation to UPPL president Pramod Boro on March 15. The veteran leader had joined the party in April 2024 after leaving the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), bringing along a large number of supporters.
His induction into the UPPL had taken place during a public ceremony in Kajalgaon in Chirang district and was seen as a major political development in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), signalling shifting alliances in the region.
Brahmaโs resignation comes shortly after another prominent UPPL leader, Kampa Borgoyary, stepped down from the party, raising concerns about internal challenges within the organisation.
Political observers say the departure of two influential leaders within a short span could affect the UPPLโs electoral prospects in the BTR, where political activity has intensified ahead of the Assembly polls.
While the reasons behind the resignations have not been officially confirmed, the timing has sparked speculation about possible political realignments in the region as parties begin preparing for the upcoming elections.
