Guwahati: Assam Police on Wednesday arrested the primary suspect in the, identified as Mridupawan Bora of Simaluguri in Sivasagar district.
Bora was intercepted in Kaliabor while traveling from Guwahati to his hometown.
The case involves a hidden camera found in a girlsโ hostel bathroom at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) campus in Guwahati.
The device was first detected on February 25, 2026, triggering concern among students and institute officials.
Investigators said Bora allegedly orchestrated the plan with the involvement of his friend, a TISS student. In early February, he reportedly supplied her with a camera concealed inside a soap case. According to officials, the device had a microprocessor and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Police learned about the camera during questioning of the student, which eventually led to the unraveling of the operation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Guwahati, told reporters that the accused appeared to have a โpsychological intentโ behind his actions. โWe have information suggesting he may have been involved in similar incidents outside Guwahati,โ the DCP added.
Explaining the deviceโs functionality, the officer said, โThe hidden camera contained a microprocessor and operated through Wi-Fi, which the student controlled. It connected automatically when the Wi-Fi was switched on. We identified only one location inside the bathroom where it had been placed.โ
The DCP noted that the arrests were made after sufficient evidence was collected, with technical assistance from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G). โAs of now, no one else apart from the two suspects has been identified,โ he said.
Although the purpose behind the act has not yet been determined, investigators suspect the videos were possibly meant to be shared on explicit online platforms.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have said further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
