The skull was discovered by sanitation workers while unloading garbage from a municipal waste collection vehicle at the dumping site

Doomdooma: A human skull recovered from a municipal dumping ground in Assam’s Jorhat district on Friday has triggered a police investigation, with authorities examining whether it was an anatomical specimen improperly discarded by a medical or educational institution before entering the city’s waste stream.

The skull was discovered by sanitation workers while unloading garbage from a municipal waste collection vehicle at the dumping site. Police and the district administration were immediately informed, following which officials, including the Circle Officer, reached the spot and launched an inquiry.

“A human skull was recovered from our garbage collection vehicle today. As soon as we found it, we informed the police and the district administration. The Circle Officer also reached the spot. Police have started an investigation. A wire is tied to the skull and ‘B4’ is written on it. It appears it may have been used for educational or medical purposes and was accidentally thrown away with the garbage,” a municipal staff member said.

Officials said the inscription “B4” on the skull and the wire attached to it suggest it may have been an anatomical specimen used for medical or educational training. However, its origin has not yet been established, and no institution has been linked to the recovery.

Police have seized the skull for forensic examination and are investigating whether it was discarded in violation of biomedical waste disposal norms or unlawfully entered the municipal waste stream.

Authorities said the source of the skull and the circumstances leading to its disposal would be determined as the investigation progresses.
