Digboi: Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, over 150 workers, student leaders, and grassroots organisers from opposition parties formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a ceremony at Cultural Hall in Kailashpur under Assamโs Digboi constituency on Wednesday.
The event marked the formal induction of these members into the BJP in the Buridihing region of Upper Assam.
Former members of the Indian National Congress, Asom Jatiya Parishad, and Raijor Dal, along with several student leaders and social activists, took formal membership in the BJP, citing the partyโs governance model and development initiatives as motivating factors.
Many of the new members mentioned visible progress in infrastructure, welfare programs, and grassroots connectivity under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as influencing their decision to join.
Political observers note that the large-scale shift may indicate a changing political mood in Digboi. The induction of over 150 opposition workers in a single programme is expected to strengthen the BJPโs booth-level network and electoral operations across Buridihing Mouza.
Party sources described the development as a morale booster that reflects growing public confidence in the BJPโs governance and long-term vision for Assam.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Suren Phukan stated that since Buridihing Mouza became part of the Digboi constituency, sustained efforts have been made to ensure comprehensive development.
He pointed to improvements in road connectivity, rural infrastructure, education, healthcare, and sports facilities, attributing the accelerated implementation of projects to the support of the state government.
He added that the expanding support base of the BJP reflects public confidence in transparent governance and decisive leadership.
The MLA called on the newly inducted members to work unitedly and dedicate themselves to public service, noting the importance of the upcoming Assembly elections for ensuring continued development and stability in the region.
The joining ceremony was part of a broader schedule of developmental and community initiatives undertaken by the MLA across the constituency. During the day, he inaugurated Namghars at Talpathar Village, Ratnapur Hatigarh Village, Kailashpur Changmai Village, and Navajyoti Gaon.
A cheque distribution under the โEti Kali Duti Paatโ initiative was also organised at Philbari Hanuman Tea Estate, providing financial assistance to tea garden communities and reflecting the governmentโs focus on inclusive growth.
The development is expected to influence the constituencyโs political landscape as campaigning intensifies across Upper Assam.
