Bajali: A case of alleged impersonation and fraud has been reported from Assam’s Pathsala after a youth was caught posing as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer.
The accused has been identified as Laxman Barua of Haripur, Pathsala. He allegedly created a fake CBI identity card using a computer and presented himself as a senior investigating officer.
According to reports, he used the false identity to influence people and claim access to government departments.
Investigators said the accused claimed he could arrange jobs in departments such as the Education Department, Assam Police and Navodaya Vidyalayas. Several fake appointment letters were recovered from his mobile phone.
Officials also found images of forged signatures of senior officials, including the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam and heads of various departments.
Authorities further recovered a seal allegedly belonging to the Patacharkuchi Revenue Circle Officer, printed on stamp paper.
Reports also claimed that the accused had contacted members of an illegal arms network to procure a pistol for Rs 80,000.
The case came to light after a complaint was filed by the family of a woman the accused was allegedly planning to marry. The family alleged that he was already married twice and was preparing for a third marriage.
Following the complaint, members of Hindu organisations detained him in Pathsala. During preliminary inquiry, additional allegations of fraud surfaced.
It was also reported that Barua had previously run a private school, Srijan Academy, in Pathsala, which has since been shut down.
A cheque book and a cheque reportedly worth Rs 5 lakh were also recovered.
Members of Bajrang Dal said the accused allegedly attempted to resolve the matter by offering a cheque of Rs 5 lakh at the spot.
Police are continuing further investigation into the case.
