Haflong: Rajesh Kumar, a Resident Engineer (RE) of a construction firm, has escaped from Haflong town after allegedly harassing a female staff member working under him at the Haflong office in Assam’s Dima Hasao.

Kumar, 58, a resident of Muzaffarpur district in Bihar, has been working as a Resident Engineer under the construction firm Nippon Koei India Pvt. Ltd., which has its office in Haflong and head office in Guwahati.

The firm is constructing the 90-km road from Lower Haflong to Haflong Tiniali in Dima Hasao.

Kumar had allegedly been harassing the female staff member with obscene words and messages for the past few months. Police have lodged an FIR at Haflong Police Station (Case No. 15/2026) under Section 75(2) (sexual harassment) of the BNS in connection with the matter.

The police complaint filed by the victim also stated that the accused had been continuously texting her and even calling her to his house at night.

It further stated that the RE had left behind a resignation letter with a forged signature, allegedly signed by office manager Supratim Dey, who also helped him escape from Haflong.

The victim alleged that the accused had offered her the post of Office Manager in return for a โ€˜sexual favourโ€™. When she refused, the RE allegedly withheld two monthsโ€™ salary of the female staff member.

โ€œI am the sole breadwinner in our family, and Rajesh had been trying to take advantage as he knew my economic condition. As the only female worker in our office, I hesitated to talk about it with other staff. I also informed our Project Manager, Mr. Deepjyoti Saikia. He assured me he would take action, but so far no action has been taken, and he is now refusing to take my calls,โ€ the victim said.

Police officials said they have alerted all police stations, including authorities in the accusedโ€™s hometown, and will bring him to Haflong once they arrest him.
