Guwahati: In a major push towards cleaner and more reliable household energy, the Government of Assam has announced the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections across multiple districts, citing evolving LPG supply dynamics and broader geopolitical factors.

Acting in line with guidelines from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the state government has issued a public notice outlining a phased rollout of PNG infrastructure in key urban centres, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, and Tezpur.

The project, spearheaded by Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL), Purba Bharati Gas Private Limited (PBGPL), and North East Gas Distribution Company Limited (NEGDCL), aims to provide approximately 12,500 new PNG connections in areas where pipeline infrastructure is already in place.

Officials said consumers in the notified localities can apply for connections through QR codes provided in the public notice or by directly contacting the respective agencies. A common toll-free helpline โ€” 1800-547-1266 โ€” has also been activated to assist applicants.

The move is being positioned as a significant step towards reducing dependence on LPG cylinders while ensuring a safer, more cost-effective, and uninterrupted fuel supply for households.

With infrastructure expansion planned in phases starting in July, the initiative is expected to strengthen energy security in Assam and improve ease of living, particularly in rapidly urbanising regions.
