Guwahati: Three minor boys have been detained in Assam’s Barpeta district for the alleged rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl.
The victim’s body was recovered from a field in No. 2 Chachra village under the Baghbar police station limits on Monday evening. According to investigators, the girl went missing after returning from school, prompting her family to launch a search.
A police team led by senior district officials subsequently detained the three minors based on initial inputs. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and forensic evidence is being collected from the spot.
The incident has triggered local protests, with residents demanding fast-track legal proceedings. Police officials stated that the investigation is underway and further actions will be taken in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act.
