Digboi: In a shocking incident that has sparked outrage in Assamโ€™s Tinsukia district, a young man was allegedly run over and killed by a truck following a minor altercation at Powai Centre under Digboi Police Station on Monday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Akash Tiwari, a resident of Powai Centre. Police said the accused, identified as Akash Singh, is also a local resident and was reportedly known to the victim. Both men were said to be in the 25 to 27 age group.

According to eyewitnesses, the two were involved in a brief verbal altercation earlier in the evening. What initially appeared to be a minor dispute later turned fatal.

Locals alleged that after the argument, Singh went home, returned with a truck bearing registration number AS 01 SC 1951, and deliberately rammed the vehicle into Tiwari. They further claimed that the accused drove the truck over the victim multiple times, causing his death on the spot.

The accused reportedly surrendered at Margherita Police Station later that night and was subsequently taken into custody by Digboi Police. An investigation is underway.

The incident triggered anger among residents of the greater Powai area, who staged a road blockade on the Margheritaโ€“Digboi road, demanding strict punishment for the accused. Protesters alleged that the repeated use of the vehicle clearly indicated an intention to kill.

Security personnel from Digboi and nearby Margherita were deployed in the area to prevent any escalation and maintain law and order.

The victimโ€™s family members have demanded justice, while the brutal killing has left the local residents in shock.
