Guwahati: The historic Unit-I of the Namrup Fertiliser Plant, India’s first natural gas-based fertiliser plant, has been demolished after more than five decades of operation, paving the way for a new ammonia-urea plant in Assam.

Namrup-I began commercial production on January 1, 1969, and played a key role in fertiliser production and agricultural development in Assam and the Northeast.

The demolition marks the beginning of preparations for the construction of the Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited (AVFCCL), a joint venture that will replace the ageing facility with a new ammonia-urea plant.

The upcoming plant will be equipped with modern technology and is expected to augment domestic fertiliser production and support agricultural requirements in the region.

The demolition of the landmark unit marks the end of one of Assam’s oldest industrial facilities, which remained in operation for more than five decades.
