Guwahati: Congress national leaders Neeraj Shukla and Harmit Baweja on Friday strongly criticised the BJP-led Assam government while addressing a press conference in Majuli. They said the BJP has completed 10 years in power in Assam and must now answer for its performance over the decade.

The leaders pointed out that Upper Assam, from Golaghat to Charaideo, is rich in natural resources, yet the condition of healthcare in the region remains very poor. They alleged that Assamโ€™s health sector is among the bottom five in the country.

Referring to Majuliโ€™s unique geographical positionโ€”surrounded by the Brahmaputra on all sidesโ€”they said that despite the Chief Minister being elected from Majuli, the island has seen little development.

They accused the BJP government of failing to complete the long-pending Majuliโ€“Jorhat bridge and of neglecting the overall development of Majuli.

The Congress leaders further alleged that the work on the Majuliโ€“Jorhat bridge was restarted only ahead of elections. They accused the government of failing to address key issues such as unemployment, healthcare, and river erosion in Majuli.

Calling for unity against what they described as widespread corruption, the leaders also alleged irregularities in the allotment of char land, including claims linked to the Chief Ministerโ€™s wife. They criticised the BJP government for pursuing what they called anti-people and election-focused policies.

Several Congress leaders and workers were present at the press conference, including District Congress president Amal Pujari, former District President Dadhiram Barua, Bishnu Kamal Payeng, Muhim Chandra Payeng, Tinku Patir, Majuli Block Congress President Devakanta Das, and former Block President Lakshya Gayan.
