Guwahati: Assam Congress has nearly finalised candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, party president Gaurav Gogoi said. The official list could be released as early as Saturday, 14th March 2026, with discussions on remaining seats expected soon.
Gogoi added, โAround 95 percent of the constituencies in Assam have been decided. The list may be announced tomorrow, and we will take up the rest shortly.โ
The Congress Central Election Committee met on Thursday to review preparations for the Assam polls. The session was chaired by Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, along with national president Mallikarjun Kharge.
The party gained further momentum when former Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) national finance secretary Jayanta Khaound joined Congress on Monday, bringing along other leaders.
Khaound was formally welcomed at the party headquarters, where senior figures including Assam in-charge and AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh Alwar, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Congress senior observer for Assam D K Shivakumar, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gogoi, and national secretary Manoj Chauhan were present.
Speaking about Khaoundโs entry, Gogoi remarked that the addition of a seasoned grassroots leader demonstrates โrising dissatisfaction in Assam with the current leadership under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarmaโ and points to growing momentum for political change in the state.
