Guwahati: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is likely to visit Assam in the first half of July as part of a proposed visit to India, according to a report by NHK WORLD-JAPAN.
The international broadcasting service of Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that Takaichi may travel to India as early as July for talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Citing Japanese government sources, the report said arrangements are underway for Takaichi to visit Assam, where she is expected to hold her second in-person meeting with Modi.
The two leaders are expected to discuss measures to expand cooperation in areas including security and economic engagement, building on the Japan-India joint vision for the next decade announced during Modi’s visit to Japan last year.
The discussions are also expected to cover global issues such as energy security and efforts to strengthen critical mineral supply chains amid continuing tensions in the Middle East.
According to the report, Takaichi is seeking to further strengthen bilateral ties through regular reciprocal visits by the leaders of the two countries.
The proposed visit comes nearly six years after a planned trip by then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Guwahati was called off at the last minute in December 2019 amid protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Assam.
The Assam government had not issued any statement confirming Takaichi’s proposed visit at the time of filing this report.
