Imphal: Amid Manipur’s prolonged ethnic conflict, a women’s organisation in Senapati district intervened to rescue a Kuki civilian detained by Naga youth volunteers, before escorting him safely back to his village in a gesture of compassion across ethnic divides.

The civilian, identified as 54-year-old Ngamsei Chongloi of Taphou Kuki village, had travelled to Senapati Bazaar with a Naga friend to buy fish when the two were intercepted by Naga youth volunteers. Chongloi was subsequently detained, according to local sources.

After receiving information about the incident, members of the Senapati District Women’s Association (SDWA) intervened, secured Chongloi’s release and accompanied him back to Taphou Kuki village later in the day.

The civilian was formally handed over to the village authorities at the residence of the Taphou village chief, where community leaders thanked the SDWA for its intervention. They also appealed to residents, particularly young people, to avoid travelling to areas where tensions remain high.

The SDWA urged people to exercise restraint and avoid unnecessary movement while the unrest continues. The chairperson of the Taphou Kuki village women’s body thanked the association for ensuring the civilian’s safe return, and the gathering concluded with a prayer.
