Imphal: At least 22 Tangkhul Naga women vigilantes were injured, some of them seriously, during clashes with security forces at two locations in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Sunday amid protests against the establishment of a temporary Assam Rifles outpost.
According to officials at Ukhrul District Hospital, the incidents occurred around 3:30 pm at New Haven, under the jurisdiction of Shokvao village, and Finch Corner, under the jurisdiction of Shangshak village. The injured were admitted to the district hospital for treatment.
The confrontation stemmed from local opposition to the temporary Assam Rifles outpost in the area.
Videos circulated on social media showed security personnel using tear gas shells and batons to disperse protesters. Reports also indicated that rounds were fired into the air during the confrontation.
Locals further alleged that a leader of the Katho Katamnao Long (Katho Students’ Union) was chased and assaulted by security personnel during the unrest.
The incidents triggered concern among local civil society organisations, which condemned the use of force against protesters.
