Imphal: The Joint Tribes Council of Manipur (JTCM) and the Western Command of the Naga Village Guard (NVG) have strongly condemned the armed attack and arson targeting Naga volunteers in Betiang village of Noney district.
The incident, which took place on July 22, has been described by the groups as a serious attack on indigenous communities amid an already tense situation.
Representing the Zeme, Rongmei, Inpui and Liangmai tribes, the JTCM termed the assault a cowardly act and said it posed a threat to the peace, security and territorial integrity of their ancestral lands.
Following the incident, the Western Command of the NVG issued Martial Directives, announcing a stance of “total resistance”. The command stated that there would be no room for neutrality during the ongoing crisis and warned that any inaction would be considered support for hostile forces.
The NVG also issued a final warning to individuals, organisations or village authorities accused of providing assistance, logistical support or shelter to groups it considers hostile. It said such actions would invite strict consequences.
Meanwhile, the Rongmei Naga Luphuam Manipur (RNLPM) expressed shock over the attack, questioning the targeting of community members by armed groups claiming to protect Naga interests. The organisation said such incidents weaken Naga unity, create fear among people and cannot be justified.
The RNLPM has called for an immediate halt to such attacks and urged all groups to ensure that community volunteers and civilians are not targeted.
