Manipur's Mirabai Chanu won Commonwealth Games gold, while Rishikanta Singh claimed silver with a record-breaking performance.

Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday congratulated weightlifters Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and Chanambam Rishikanta Singh after the duo brought glory to India by winning gold and silver medals, respectively, at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.

Mirabai Chanu continued her dominance on the international stage by claiming her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48 kg category. She lifted a total of 190 kg, including 85 kg in the snatch and 105 kg in the clean and jerk, setting new Commonwealth and Games records in the process.

Rishikanta Singh, meanwhile, secured the silver medal in the men’s 60 kg category with a personal-best performance. He also created a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with a lift of 121 kg and finished with a total lift of 264 kg.

Congratulating Mirabai on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described her performance as outstanding and praised her consistency on the Commonwealth stage.

“The talented Mirabai Chanu once again showcased her skills at the Commonwealth Games with a stunning performance in the 48 kg category and winning Gold. She lifted a total of 190 kg (85 kg snatch and 105 kg clean and jerk), setting new Commonwealth and Games records. With back-to-back Commonwealth Games Golds and an overall fourth CWG medal to her name, she remains an inspiration for every Indian. Congratulations to her! Best wishes for the endeavours ahead,” Modi wrote.

The Prime Minister also congratulated Rishikanta Singh, applauding his determination and personal-best effort.

“Very proud of Indian lifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for winning a Silver Medal and also achieving his personal best. His determination and outstanding performance have brought immense joy to the nation. May he continue to scale greater heights and inspire many young athletes. Best wishes for his future endeavours!” he said.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also hailed the achievements of both athletes, describing their performances as a proud moment for the state and the country.

In a Facebook post, the Chief Minister congratulated Mirabai for rewriting the record books with her gold medal-winning performance and praised Rishikanta for his silver medal and record-breaking snatch lift.

He said the achievements of the two weightlifters reflected their dedication, discipline and commitment to excellence, adding that they had brought immense pride to Manipur and inspired a new generation of sportspersons.

“The people of Manipur celebrate this historic achievement with immense joy and wish both athletes many more successes in the years ahead,” the Chief Minister said.
