Imphal: Civil society organisations staged a sit-in protest in Manipur’s Imphal West district on Tuesday, demanding justice for six Liangmai Naga civilians who were abducted and killed, and urging the government to take action against those allegedly responsible.
The protest, held at Changanggei Community Hall under the banner of the Justice for the Six Sons of Koubru Joint Committee (J6SKUC), was supported by the Joint Tribes Council (JTC), AMUCO, COCOMI, Changanggei Apunba Club, Langdai Khangsunaha, RIFPCO Manipur and several other organisations.
Following the sit-in, protesters formed a human chain and raised slogans demanding accountability and justice for the six victims.
The J6SKUC, constituted under the aegis of the Joint Tribes Council and coordinated by Rongmei Naga Luphwam, Manipur State President Chingdinliu Panmei, said it was formed to pursue justice for the victims through peaceful and democratic means.
Addressing the gathering, committee representatives said the campaign was not directed against any particular community but sought impartial enforcement of the law, prosecution of those responsible and restoration of public confidence in the justice system.
The committee submitted five key demands to the government, including the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those allegedly involved in the killings, withdrawal of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups, declaration of the Kuki National Front-Presidential (KNF-P) as a terrorist organisation, removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, and eviction of what it described as illegal villages established on government and protected land.
Protesters carried placards bearing messages such as “Arrest the Named Killers. Prosecute the Guilty,” “End SoO. End the Proxy War,” and “Protect Our Land. Uphold the Law.”
The committee appealed to the Centre and the Manipur government to act on its demands and said it would continue its agitation through peaceful and democratic means until justice is delivered.
