Imphal: At least six protesters were injured when security personnel fired tear gas and lobbed mock bombs at the historic Khwairamband Bazar in Imphal city.
The incident occurred as protesters attempted to march towards the Manipur Legislative Assembly, where the third day of its 12th session was underway on Wednesday.
The massive protest was jointly organized by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) and Bishnupur Apunba Pupi Lup (a womenโs organization), demanding the deferment of the 2026 census and subsequent delimitation until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is implemented, along with ensuring free movement on the National Highways in Manipur.
Security personnel lobbed mock bombs and fired tear gas when the protesters began marching from Khwairamband Bazar towards the Assembly at around 11:15 AM on Wednesday. Placards held by protesters read, โNo Census, No Free Movementโ and โNo NRC, No Census.โ The injured, mostly women, were rushed to RIMS hospital, said Lourembam Pramo, president of Bishnupur Apunba Pupi Lup.
She stated that identifying illegal immigrants is essential to prevent demographic imbalances, protect indigenous rights, and stop the legalization of foreigners.
Meanwhile, JFD convener Jeetendra Ningomba stated that including illegal immigrants in the population count would result in a fraudulent outcome, which could negatively impact the rights of genuine citizens. He alleged that illegal immigrants have been engaged in a violent campaign against indigenous communities.
