Imphal: The United Naga Council (UNC), the apex Naga body in Manipur, on Friday called for an immediate halt to the escalation of ethnic violence in the state, reaffirming its neutral position in the ongoing conflict.

In a statement, the UNC emphasised that the Nagas in Manipur have maintained a stance of โ€œneutralityโ€ since the outbreak of violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities on May 3, 2023. The council said this position has been upheld โ€œwithout fear or favour towards any communityโ€ and is guided by a commitment to peace and the restoration of normalcy in the region.

Concern over recent incidents

The UNC expressed deep concern over fresh incidents of violence in Litan and K. Lungwiram villages under the Litan police station in Ukhrul district. The statement specifically cited the alleged attack on Starling Shimray, a Naga resident of Shakarphung, by Kuki individuals on February 7. The incident reportedly triggered widespread unrest, resulting in the burning of houses and damage to properties belonging to both Naga and Kuki communities.

The body also condemned the torching of a house belonging to Azan Abonmai in the early hours of February 9 at K. Lungwiram.

Allegations against security forces

Raising concerns about the security situation, the UNC alleged the presence of armed Kuki militants in the area and claimed that security forces facilitated arson attacks on Naga houses in Litan. The council said the recent incidents are rooted in long-standing land ownership disputes.

Commitment to dialogue and peace
Reiterating its commitment to long-term peace, the UNC said it will continue to pursue solutions through dialogue, while asserting that it will not compromise on the protection of Naga history, culture, land, and identity.
