Imphal: The ongoing monsoon season has brought water crisis into sharp focus, with the worst floods in decades crippling large parts of Imphal, especially the Imphal East district of Manipur.

The deluge has not only submerged streets but also forced the shutdown of nearly all water treatment facilities, cutting the water supply by a staggering 85%.

On Thursday, the Government of Manipur officially announced a temporary suspension of drinking water supply across several flood-affected areas in the Manipur Valley. The Imphal East district, one of the hardest-hit regions, remains severely impacted as floodwaters have infiltrated water treatment machinery, rendering them inoperable.

In a statement, the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) confirmed that all water supply maintenance operations in the valley have been halted due to the continuous downpour and severe flooding that has persisted over the past three days. While some reports cited pipeline maintenance, the primary reason for the water cut appears to be the flooding’s direct damage to water infrastructure and the contamination of sources.

“Waterlogging and infrastructure disruptions have made continued operation unsafe and impossible,” the PHED stated, urging residents to remain patient. The government assured the public that water supply will resume as soon as the situation improves and the floodwaters recede. Authorities expressed deep regret for the inconvenience caused.
