The Government of Meghalaya, led by Shri Conrad K. Sangma, Honโ€™ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, was conferred the Good Governance Award at the Water Transversality Global Awards and Conclave 2026, held on 6th March at the India International Centre, New Delhi.

The award was presented by the Chief Guest, Shri Om Birla, Honโ€™ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha, in recognition of Meghalayaโ€™s exemplary governance initiatives and its integrated approach towards sustainable development. On behalf of the Chief Minister, the award was received by Mr. Albert Chang, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Government of Meghalaya.

The Good Governance Award recognized Meghalayaโ€™s growing reputation as a model for people-centric governance, policy innovation, and sustainable development. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the state has undertaken several transformative initiatives focused on improving governance systems, strengthening citizen participation, and promoting environmentally responsible growth.

A key feature of Meghalayaโ€™s governance approach has been its community-led development model, which places local institutions and communities at the centre of decision-making. Initiatives related to natural resource management, particularly spring-shed and watershed conservation programmes, have strengthened water security in rural areas while promoting ecological sustainability. These efforts have also demonstrated the value of coordinated policy action across sectors such as water management, agriculture, and rural development.

The state has also made significant progress in digital governance and citizen engagement, enabling greater transparency and efficiency in public service delivery. Platforms such as citizen outreach and grievance redressal mechanisms have improved communication between the government and the public, reinforcing the principles of accountable and responsive governance.

In addition to governance reforms, Meghalaya has prioritized sustainable economic development and livelihood generation. Initiatives promoting eco-tourism, entrepreneurship, and sustainable agriculture have created employment opportunities while preserving the stateโ€™s rich natural and cultural heritage. Programmes supporting farmers, rural enterprises, and local industries have further contributed to strengthening inclusive economic growth across the state.

The government has also focused on social empowerment and grassroots development, with special emphasis on womenโ€™s participation, community enterprises, and rural infrastructure. These initiatives have helped expand economic opportunities and improve quality of life for communities across the state while ensuring that development remains environmentally responsible and socially inclusive.

Addressing the gathering during the inauguration and awards felicitation ceremony, Shri Om Birla emphasized that development and environmental protection must not be seen as opposing forces but as complementary priorities. Highlighting the importance of sustainable and inclusive development, he noted that water conservation remains critical for securing the future of humanity and called upon governments, institutions, and citizens to work collaboratively to protect natural resources.

He further underlined that water, energy, health, and environment are deeply interconnected, and the challenges associated with them can only be addressed through coordinated and integrated policy approaches. Stressing the importance of governance synergy, he observed that โ€œtransversalityโ€ between departments and policies is essential for achieving inclusive and sustainable development. He also called for adopting the mantra of โ€œReduce, Reuse, Recharge, and Recycleโ€ to strengthen water conservation efforts and highlighted initiatives such as Catch the Rain and the Jal Jeevan Mission as examples of how public participation can drive meaningful change.

The Good Governance Award at the Water Transversality Global Awards and Conclave 2026 recognizes Meghalayaโ€™s efforts to integrate economic progress, environmental stewardship, and community participation into a unified governance framework. The recognition highlights the stateโ€™s commitment to sustainable development and underscores the role of innovative leadership in addressing complex challenges related to water, energy, health, and the environment. Further it also reflects Meghalayaโ€™s emergence as a leading example of forward-looking governance, demonstrating how collaborative policies and people-centred development can create a sustainable and resilient future.
