Guwahati: The Meghalaya government has said that elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) will be scheduled only after the completion of the ongoing delimitation exercise.
Speaking on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of District Council Affairs Prestone Tynsong said that a notification has already been issued to form a delimitation committee, which has been tasked with carrying out the boundary revision work.
He added that once the committee finishes its assignment, the proposal will be placed before the state Assembly and then forwarded to the Governor for final approval. Only after these steps are completed will the election schedule be announced.
When asked whether the government was waiting for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, Tynsong clarified that this process is not currently required at the state level.
He further stated that the SIR process falls under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission of India and not the state government.
He also said that the state is prepared to carry out the SIR whenever the Election Commission issues the necessary order.
The GHADC elections were earlier put on hold after unrest erupted in the Garo Hills over objections to the inclusion of non-tribal candidates in the electoral process.
