Guwahati: Authorities are aiming to complete Meghalaya’s Rs 151-crore Shillong Ropeway project by late 2025, with construction now progressing after prolonged delays linked to legal proceedings and environmental approvals.
South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai visited the project site on Saturday to assess the pace of work, where officials from the implementing agency outlined the latest construction schedule and the remaining work required before completion.
The ropeway, connecting Lawsohtun to Shillong Peak, had remained pending for several years because of court scrutiny and the clearance process.
Environmental safeguards remain a key component of the project. Under the approved compensatory afforestation plan, 10 trees will be planted for every tree removed, a condition that had to be fulfilled before work could move ahead in the ecologically sensitive Shillong range.
The new transport link is expected to improve access to Shillong Peak while reducing vehicle congestion on the existing Upper Shillong route.
Officials also expect the project to improve visitor movement to one of Meghalaya’s most visited tourist destinations while creating an alternative transport option.
The inspection covered the Shillong Ropeway along with other infrastructure schemes currently under execution in the Khasi Hills.
