Guwahati: Mizoram Horticulture Minister C. Lalsawivunga on Wednesday inaugurated the 13th Horticulture Fair at Lammual, highlighting the importance of strengthening agricultural and horticultural activities to achieve greater economic self-reliance in the state.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Minister of State Prof. Lalnilawma, MIFCO Chairman Lalthazuala, along with senior officials, farmers, and stakeholders from the horticulture sector.

In his address, Lalsawivunga described the fair as a key platform for farmers to directly showcase and sell their produce to consumers, improving market access and income opportunities.

He called upon residents of Aizawl and nearby areas to actively support local growers by purchasing locally produced agricultural goods displayed at the event.

Expressing concern over Mizoramโ€™s persistent dependence on external supplies even decades after attaining statehood, the minister said the situation highlights the urgent need to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on imports.

He emphasized that events like the horticulture fair should be used to promote sustainable growth and move the state towards greater economic independence.

The minister also pointed out the rising demand for Mizoramโ€™s agricultural produce in other parts of India, crediting the popularity to the stateโ€™s largely organic farming practices.

He encouraged farmers to continue chemical-free cultivation and explore niche crops that are less commonly grown across the country to enhance competitiveness and profitability.

Lalsawivunga further announced that the state government is preparing to launch a pilot project on dragon fruit cultivation to diversify horticultural production and increase farmersโ€™ income levels.

During the event, the Best Horticulture Farmer Award was presented to selected farmers from each district in recognition of their contribution to the sector.
