Aizawl: Mizoramโs main opposition, the Mizo National Front (MNF), on Monday released its list of candidates for the upcoming elections to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The schedule for the 19-member municipal corporation polls is yet to be announced by the Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC), though officials have indicated the elections may be held in April or May.
MNF president Zoramthanga unveiled the names of candidates for all 19 wards at a function held at Vanapa Hall in Aizawl. Addressing party workers and supporters, he expressed confidence that the MNF would retain control of the civic body.
โI believe this is one of the most distinguished groups of candidates the MNF has ever fielded. Their backgrounds clearly demonstrate their capability,โ Zoramthanga said, urging voters to support MNF nominees in their respective wards.
โWith the grace of God and the support of the people, I am confident we will secure a victory,โ he added.
Launching a sharp attack on the ruling Zoram Peopleโs Movement (ZPM) government led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Zoramthanga alleged that the party had failed to deliver on its pre-poll promises.
โEverything they promised to do, they havenโt done; and everything they promised not to do, they have done. The people of Mizoram are fed up with the ZPM government,โ the former chief minister said.
Citing recent electoral outcomes as evidence of what he described as declining public support for the ZPM, Zoramthanga pointed to the partyโs performance in multiple contests.
โThey lost in the Sinlung Hills elections, performed poorly in the village and local council polls, and lost again in the Dampa Assembly by-election,โ he said.
He also added that in the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) elections held in December last year, the MNF emerged as the leading party while the ZPM finished third.
Earlier, the Congress had announced a list of 13 candidates for the AMC polls.
In the previous AMC elections held in February 2021, the MNF secured a majority by winning 11 seats. The ZPM won six seats, while the Congress claimed two.
