Dimapur: The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) on Monday held an emergency meeting in Kohima with all line departments to discuss the severe damage to roads and other infrastructure caused by extreme weather events across the state.
Chairing the meeting, NSDMA adviser Z Nyusietho Nyuthe highlighted the various disaster incidents and action taken reports on the severe damage to roads and infrastructure across the state.
Reports from districts like Chumoukedima, Meluri, Kiphire, Noklak, Dimapur, Shamator, Mokokchung, Kohima and Peren were discussed, detailing landslides, flooding, infrastructure damage and damage to roads.
Nyuthe stressed the need for swift action to restore road connections in landslide-affected areas and additional machinery in disaster-prone areas.
He called for continued coordination among line departments and monitoring of water levels in vulnerable areas like Chathe and Dhansiri rivers.
He also directed the line departments and the NHIDCL to enhance infrastructure resilience and sustainable construction solutions tailored to Nagaland’s hilly terrain, emphasising disaster resilience to withstand extreme weather conditions.
At the meeting, NSDMA joint CEO Johnny Rongmei requested the DCs of Chumoukedima and Peren to concentrate on maintaining the road between Sukhovi and Mhainamtsi, a critical alternative route to NH-29, which was affected by heavy mudslides and landslides in multiple locations.
Rongmei further requested the authorities concerned to allocate maximum resources to repair and maintain this critical road stretch to ensure smooth flow for heavy vehicular traffic.
He added that stationing machinery on standby will help to manage traffic flow, reducing congestion and facilitating smoother movement.
The district disaster management authorities, through video conference, highlighted the real-time damages of roads and infrastructures and updated the progress of restoration work and also the immediate requirement for relief and support in their respective districts.
