Dimapur: A team from Mizoramโs Planning and Programme Implementation Department held a consultative meeting with stakeholders from Nagaland at the Dimapur DCโs conference hall on Thursday to examine how railway connectivity affects social structures, cultural practices, and economic transformation in Nagaland.
The Mizoram team, led by MLA and chairman of the study committee on the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) and Railway Line Services, Pu T Lalhlimpula, sought insights into how Nagaland has managed both the opportunities and challenges arising from improved rail connectivity.
Speaking about new railway services in Mizoram, Lalhlimpula said the dialogue focused on two major infrastructure initiatives expected to shape the regionโs future: the proposed railway line from Bairabi to Sairang in Mizoram, and the KMMTTP.
He explained that the KMMTTP aims to connect Kolkata to Sittwe port in Myanmar by sea, extend through inland waterways to Paletwa, and link to Mizoram by road. Funded by the Government of India and targeted for completion by 2027, the project is expected to provide a crucial alternative route to the northeastern states, bypassing the Siliguri Corridor and reducing travel distance by over 700 kilometres.
Referring to Dimapur as a city shaped by railway connectivity, Lalhlimpula emphasized that the committeeโs visit was intended to draw practical lessons from Nagalandโs long-standing experience in rail infrastructure to guide future projects in Mizoram.
He noted that Nagaland, with a railway history dating back to 1903, offers valuable insights for Mizoram, where Bairabi was connected by broad-gauge rail only in 2016 and Aizawl linked by rail in September 2025.
Highlighting the shared socio-cultural and religious ties between the two states, where Christianity plays a central role in social and community life, Lalhlimpula said enhanced connectivity brings both growth opportunities and challenges related to culture, identity, and livelihoods.
The Mizoram delegation expressed eagerness to learn from Nagalandโs experiencesโboth positive and negative to maximize benefits while minimizing adverse impacts. Lalhlimpula added that the interaction would strengthen cooperation and mutual understanding between the two states and support informed planning for future infrastructure development in Mizoram.
