In a rare surgical feat, doctors at a private hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday have successfully removed a foetus from the abdomen of an infant.

Sources said a team of doctors led by pediatrician Prakritish Bora removed the foetus from the abdomen of the kid at Guwahati’s Excelcare Hospitals.

The three-year-old boy who had complained of a stomach ache and breathing problem turned out to have a foetus inside him.

Karabi Das and Kulajit Das, the parents of the child, who hails from Barpeta district, initially took him to a local hospital after suffering from severe stomach pain and breathing problem.

Doctors at the local hospital suspected that the boy had a tumour but when his condition was not improved he was rushed to city’s Axcelcare Hospitals.

The doctors at Axcelcare Hospitals were shocked when scans revealed that there was a foetus within his abdomen.

According to medical experts, the medical condition, referred to as foetus in foetu, or a ‘baby within a baby’, is extremely rare, with just one in every 500-600,000 reportedly suffering from it.

A doctor of the hospital, who led the team of doctors who operated on the boy, said “The embryo which had a partially formed head was removed from the child’s body after a long operation. The boy is alright now still he has been kept under observation.”
