Media reports and a police complaint have added pressure on the university administration.

Agartala: Tripura Congress MLA and Congress Working Committee invitee Sudip Roy Barman has written to the Union Minister of Education demanding a high-level inquiry into alleged recruitment irregularities at Tripura University.

In his letter, Roy Barman accused Vice Chancellor Ganga Prasad Prasain and Registrar Deepak Sharma of corruption, favoritism, and administrative misconduct. Once a symbol of academic excellence in the Northeast, the university is now mired in controversy, he claimed.

The MLA flagged concerns over scheduled interviews for faculty positions in the Departments of Law, Sociology, and Sanskrit on June 8 and 9, despite the fact that the VC’s executive powers have been withdrawn and a new VC recruitment is underway. According to UGC norms, an outgoing VC cannot make regular appointments—rules allegedly being ignored by the current administration.

Barman further alleged that in the past year, over 30 candidates from outside Tripura were appointed, many of them underqualified, while only 4–5 local eligible candidates were selected. One of the most serious allegations involved the VC’s own son being appointed, which he described as a blatant misuse of authority.

The matter has also been discussed in the state Assembly, with the government assuring a probe. Media reports and a police complaint have added pressure on the university administration.

Allegations also suggest that some selected candidates were recommended by senior RSS and BJP leaders, though this remains unverified. The silence of top government offices including the Ministry of Education, PMO, Governor, and CM—has raised public concern.

Copies of the letter were sent to the Tripura Governor and Chief Minister Manik Saha for immediate action.
