Guwahati: Shyamkanu Mahanta, a key accused in the case related to the death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, has approached the Supreme Court seeking bail after the Gauhati High Court declined to grant him bail.
Sources said Mahanta has filed a petition before the apex court challenging the High Court’s decision. The matter has been scheduled for hearing on Tuesday.
The development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings in the high-profile case that has drawn widespread attention across Assam. Earlier, a Special Fast Track Court rejected the bail pleas of four other accused-Sandipan Garg, Amritprabha Mahanta, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya and directed that they continue to remain in judicial custody pending trial.
Before the High Court’s decision, extensive arguments were presented by both sides on Mahanta’s bail application. The matter was heard by Justice Mitali Thakuria, who had reserved the verdict after concluding hearings.
Representing the accused, defence counsel sought Mahanta’s release on bail, while Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia strongly opposed the plea and urged the court not to grant bail.
The case stems from the death of renowned musician Zubeen Garg in September 2025 and remains under judicial scrutiny at multiple levels. With the Supreme Court now set to examine Mahanta’s bail request, further developments in the matter are expected in the coming days.
