The Indian Armyโ€™s Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi said on Friday that former president Pranab Mukherjee is โ€œunder intensive care and is being treated for a lung infection and renal dysfunctionโ€.

โ€œHe continues to be in a deep coma and on ventilator support. He is haemodynamically stable,โ€ the hospital said.

The 84-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital on August 10.

He underwent critical brain surgery to remove a clot after he suffered a fall at his home on August 9.

He has also tested positive for COVID-19.

Soon after Pranab Mukherjeeโ€™s hospitalisation news went viral, wishes poured in from various quarters for his early recovery and a number of leaders sent their wishes on Twitter.

President Ram Nath Kovind spoke with his daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee and enquired about his health.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh had visited the hospital to enquire about Mukherjeeโ€™s health.

Meanwhile, special prayers were organised in Mukherjeeโ€™s ancestral village in West Bengalโ€™s Birbhum district after he was hospitalised.

Pranab Mukherjee was the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017.

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna โ€“ Indiaโ€™s highest civilian award โ€“ in August 2019.
