Guwahati: A man identified as a doctor was arrested by Cachar Police after a minor girl, who had been missing for nearly three months, was rescued along with two other victims during a raid on a hotel-cum-restaurant in the district.

The accused, identified as JP Das, was taken into custody following a late-night operation at Parijat Hotel and Restaurant at Lathigram under Udharbond Police Station limits on Tuesday.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Pal and Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Manas Saikia, police received information around 10.30 pm about suspicious lodging arrangements at the establishment and launched an immediate raid.

During the operation, the missing minor and two other victims were rescued.

Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s family, Udharbond Police Station registered Case No. 61/2026 under Sections 96 and 127 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Sections 4 and 17 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and Sections 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.

Police said investigators are examining the circumstances under which the victims were brought to the hotel, whether they were subjected to exploitation and whether the hotel owner or management had prior knowledge of the matter.

Investigators are also probing the possible involvement of a larger trafficking network or organised syndicate.

In a related development, police said Das had previously been arrested in connection with a fake doctor case, in which a chargesheet has already been filed.

Cachar Superintendent of Police Sanjib Saikia said the investigation was at a crucial stage and assured that action would be taken based on the findings.

The invocation of POCSO and anti-trafficking provisions has added further seriousness to the case, he said.
