Imphal: The Cyber Crime Police Station, Manipur, successfully apprehended a 23-year-old youth who extorted a substantial amount of money by blackmailing his girlfriend.
The accused, identified as Roshan Singha (23), son of Bishwo Kumar Singha of Malugram village, Cachar, Assam, was arrested at the gate of Imphal Airport at around 5:45 PM on June 25.
He was produced before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, on June 26 and remanded in police custody.
An Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) of the State submitted that the victim became acquainted with the accused through a friend in September 2018.
At the time, the accused falsely claimed to be from Kumbi Bazar Awang Leikai in Manipur, while the victim worked as a nurse in Kolkata.
Over the years, the two stayed in touch. Under the pretext of his father’s death and massive hospital bills, the accused repeatedly solicited funds.
In 2024, he promised the victim marriage and asked her to meet him in Guwahati. The victim subsequently resigned from her job in Bangalore, met him at Guwahati Airport, and the two stayed in a hotel at Paltan Bazar before travelling to Imphal.
Following this, Roshan Singha returned to Assam but resumed demanding money for the medical treatment of his mother and sister, which the victim complied with.
In February 2025, he sent a video clip secretly recorded during their stay in Guwahati and threatened to share it with her family members unless she paid more.
The victim complied out of fear, eventually discovering that the accusedโs true identity was Roshan Singha of Cachar, Assam, and not a local from Kumbi Bazar. Unable to bear the continuous extortion, which totalled an estimated Rs 19 lakh, the victim confided in her aunt.
Following an investigation that traced the accused’s location, he was successfully tracked down and apprehended at Imphal Airport.
One mobile phone was seized from his possession. Following a request by the APP, the Court remanded Roshan Singha in police custody till June 29.
