Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation has claimed 99 lives so far, with 12 districts still affected, according to the Assam Flood Report for August 8.
Data from the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) showed that flooding has affected 460 villages under 30 revenue circles in Sonitpur, Nagaon, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Hojai, Darrang, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Charaideo, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur and Biswanath.
The affected population stands at 1,47,376, comprising 65,962 men, 63,037 women and 18,377 children. Floodwaters have also submerged 10,599.89 hectares of agricultural land.
Golaghat has the largest affected population at 61,735, followed by Sivasagar with 43,492 and Jorhat with 24,283. Nagaon has reported 8,520 affected people, while the figure for Charaideo stands at 6,358.
The Central Water Commission’s 8 am bulletin reported three rivers above the danger mark. The Dhansiri (South) was above the level at Golaghat and Numaligarh, while the Kushiyara was above it at Sribhumi. None of the rivers was above the highest flood level.
Relief arrangements include 94 camps and centres in the affected districts. These comprise 53 relief camps and 41 relief distribution centres, with 8,568 people currently taking shelter in the camps.
Sivasagar accounts for 4,862 of the people currently staying in relief camps, the highest among the affected districts. Golaghat has 1,302 camp residents, while Jorhat and Nagaon have 1,254 and 1,031 respectively.
House damage has been reported only in Sivasagar, where 324 houses have been affected. The damage includes 176 houses that were fully or severely damaged and another 148 that suffered partial damage.
Golaghat has reported damage to seven road stretches, while two embankment-related damages have been recorded in Hojai. The latest report does not mention any damaged bridges or breaches in embankments.
Boat operations have so far helped evacuate 135 people, with the SDRF, DDRF, Fire and Emergency Services and other agencies involved in the rescue efforts. Helicopters were used to evacuate another five people.
