Shillong Laitumkhrah hawkers relocated
Shillong relocates 86 Laitumkhrah hawkers to designated vending zones as authorities work to ease traffic congestion.

Guwahati: Traffic flow in Shillongโ€™s Laitumkhrah area improved on August 17 after authorities shifted 86 roadside hawkers and vendors to designated vending spaces at Dhankheti and Brightwell Bungalow.

The relocation is part of an ongoing effort to regulate roadside vending and ease congestion on some of the cityโ€™s busiest stretches.

Shillong Municipal Board CEO PK Boro said the process was completed smoothly with the cooperation of the vendors.

โ€œEverything is arranged, everything is done. Hawkers are obeying the order and cooperating,โ€ Boro said.

To ensure an organised allocation of spaces, stalls at the new vending locations were assigned through trade-wise draws of lots.

Police personnel, Dorbar Shnong members, and Municipal Board officials were deployed during the exercise to supervise the relocation and regulate traffic and pedestrian movement. Additional personnel were kept ready to assist if needed.

East Shillong MLA M Ampareen Lyngdoh was also present during the relocation.

The move marks a significant shift for vendors who had been operating for years from established roadside vending points in Laitumkhrah and the area around the Fire Brigade.
