Police said Hussain had locked himself inside his house to evade arrest

Dibrugarh: Dibrugarh Police on Thursday arrested Imtiaz Hussain, who is accused of duping several people of crores of rupees by promising jobs and shops in return for money, from his residence in the city.

Police said Hussain had locked himself inside his house to evade arrest. A police team, accompanied by a magistrate, reached the residence near the road connecting Chiring Chapori and Amolapatty and broke open the door before taking him into custody.

Hussainโ€™s wife was also arrested in connection with the case, the officer-in-charge of Dibrugarh police station said.

Several complaints and cases have reportedly been registered against Hussain in Dibrugarh.

โ€œImtiaz Hussain and his wife have been arrested in connection with the alleged financial fraud. A warrant had been issued against him and, to evade arrest, he locked himself inside his house. We had to break open the door to arrest him. The investigation is underway,โ€ the officer-in-charge said.

He said police had been tracking Hussain since February after receiving complaints against him.

โ€œEverybody knows about him in Dibrugarh. A warrant had been issued against him, but he kept changing his location. Today, we received information about his presence and arrested him. We have also arrested his wife in connection with the case,โ€ he added.

According to police, Hussain allegedly collected money from several people by promising them jobs and, in some cases, shops. The exact amount allegedly collected and the number of people affected are yet to be ascertained.

Police recovered three vehicles from his garage โ€” a Mercedes-Benz (AS 01 TC 2792), Toyota Innova Crysta (AS 01 EL 1183) and Hyundai i10 (AS 06 T 7286).

Hussain contested the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat in the 2009 parliamentary election.
