Guwahati: A 25-year-old woman was found dead inside a rented flat in Guwahatiโs Hatigaon area on Sunday, September 6, with police suspecting that she may have been murdered.
The deceased was identified as Riya Talukdar Goswami. Her body was recovered from a third-floor flat at Anjali Griha in Basisthapur Bylane after her family alerted the police.
Personnel from Hatigaon Police Station reached the premises and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Preliminary investigation reportedly found the room in a disordered condition, while bloodstains were also noticed on the floor. Police are examining the available evidence to determine the cause of death and reconstruct the sequence of events.
Riyaโs husband, Ramanujan Goswami, has emerged as the prime suspect and is reportedly absconding. Police have launched a search to trace him and establish his whereabouts.
Goswami reportedly works as an Uber driver, and the couple had been living in the rented accommodation for around six months.
Residents of the building told police that the couple allegedly had frequent arguments. Neighbours also reported hearing loud disturbances from the flat on Saturday, followed by what sounded like a woman crying.
According to residents, only Ramanujanโs voice was heard during the disturbance, and he allegedly appeared frightened and distressed at the time.
Investigators are now collecting forensic and other evidence from the flat and questioning neighbours and people familiar with the couple as part of the probe.
Police are yet to establish the exact circumstances and cause of Riyaโs death. Efforts are underway to trace her husband, while further investigation is continuing.
