Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has appealed to residents, businesses, educational institutions and other organisations to use light purple in decorating their premises as part of a city beautification initiative inspired by kopou phool, Assamโ€™s State flower.

GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania urged owners and residents of shops, commercial establishments, hotels, restaurants, private offices, markets, city bus stands and other premises to voluntarily paint or decorate the front portions of their properties in light purple.

The civic body also urged citizens to use the colour on boundary walls, entrances, signboards, footpaths, open spaces, roadside flower pots, green areas and parks.

The GMC asked residents to keep vacant plots and public spaces clean and free of garbage and to maintain the beautified areas regularly.

It also urged citizens to clean areas in front of their premises daily, segregate waste properly and ensure scientific disposal of waste. Residents were asked to avoid littering and illegal dumping and to plant and maintain ornamental trees and plants.

The appeal covers residential welfare associations, non-governmental organisations, clubs and other organisations.

โ€œThrough the collective efforts of everyone, we appeal to the citizens of Guwahati to help make the city more beautiful and build a purple city,โ€ Sarania said.
