Guwahati: The Arunachal Pradesh government has introduced a proposal to develop the Subansiri Lower Pondage into a high-end tourism hub focused on mountains and river experiences, with the aim of boosting the stateโ€™s position in the tourism sector.

Officials stated that the plan is designed to merge nature-based tourism, adventure activities, cultural exposure, and livelihood opportunities in a sustainable framework built around a large hydropower facility.

They further noted that the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, which is being developed with a capacity of 2,000 MW, stands as Indiaโ€™s biggest hydroelectric project on the Subansiri River and is likely to be fully operational by December 2026, while four of its units are already functional.

The reservoir created by this project is proposed to be developed into a unique tourism space within a biologically rich river ecosystem.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking central government backing for the initiative.

He has also called for coordination across several ministries, including Tourism, Power, Jal Shakti, Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and DoNER, to ensure integrated execution.

As per the proposal, the tourism model will include eco-friendly travel experiences, water-based adventure sports, promotion of local culture and heritage, fisheries-linked income generation, and development of luxury river cruises.

The project draws ideas from globally known destinations such as Phewa Lake in Nepal, Kaeng Krachan in Thailand, Lake Como and the Dolomites in Italy, as well as Milford Sound in New Zealand, to shape a globally competitive tourism experience.

The Chief Minister has stated that indigenous and local communities will play a central role in the project, not only as beneficiaries but also as key protectors of the areaโ€™s cultural traditions and environment.

Officials estimate that the initiative could create over 2,500 jobs once fully established and attract around 1.5 lakh visitors each year, significantly improving local income levels and strengthening the tourism economy.

In the first stage, expert agencies will be assigned to prepare a Detailed Project Report, covering financial planning and execution strategies, while also consulting local residents.

The project is expected to open new avenues for sustainable tourism by making use of hydropower infrastructure, while also strengthening Arunachal Pradeshโ€™s presence as a prominent tourism destination at both national and international levels.
