Guwahati: The All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU) has welcomed the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) into an alleged incident of violence, vandalism and assault at the ADC-cum-Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) office in Bordumsa, Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh.
The incident reportedly took place on September 4, 2026, during a hearing related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. AICSU, the apex body representing Chakma students in India, had filed a complaint with the NHRC seeking action over the alleged incident.
According to AICSU, the NHRC has taken cognisance of the complaint under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The Commission has directed the Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh to inquire into the allegations and submit an Action Taken Report within two weeks.
The NHRC has also observed that the allegations, prima facie, appear to involve violations of the human rights of the victims, AICSU said.
Welcoming the development, the student organisation said it approached the human rights body with faith in the rule of law and the Constitution.
“The country has to run by the rule of law and the Constitution,” AICSU said, adding that it hoped the state government would conduct a fair, impartial and time-bound inquiry into the allegations.
The organisation also urged the government to take appropriate legal action against those found responsible for the alleged violence, vandalism, assault on a public official and destruction of SIR forms.
AICSU further appealed to all stakeholders to maintain peace, harmony and brotherhood in the wake of the incident.
