Guwahati: In a move aimed at strengthening road safety and improving driver accountability, traffic authorities in Guwahati have introduced a new requirement for Green Bus operators to visibly display their driving licences on the front windshield of their vehicles.
The initiative was adopted after concerns were raised over repeated traffic violations involving Green Buses. Officials noted that enforcing regulations through action against the vehicles alone proved ineffective, particularly because the buses are operated under government agencies. Identifying individual drivers responsible for violations was therefore considered essential to ensuring greater accountability.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Bora, the issue was discussed at a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee, chaired by the District Commissioner. Following deliberations, the committee approved the mandatory display of driving licences so that drivers can be easily identified during enforcement operations.
Under the new system, traffic personnel can immediately verify the identity of a driver when a violation is observed. Officers capture photographs of the licence displayed on the windshield and share the information with the relevant authorities in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) or the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC). Based on these reports, departmental proceedings can be initiated against the driver concerned.
Traffic officials have reported encouraging results since the implementation of the measure, stating that the visibility of licences has helped promote responsible driving behaviour among Green Bus operators. The step is viewed as part of a larger strategy to improve compliance with traffic regulations and enhance safety for commuters and other road users.
Authorities have also indicated that monitoring efforts will continue jointly by the Traffic Police and transport agencies. Drivers found violating traffic laws may face strict disciplinary action, reinforcing the administrationโs commitment to maintaining order and safety on the cityโs roads.
