Guwahati: The Assam government has officially renamed the โMini Secretariat, Barak Valleyโ as the โAssam Secretariat Barak Valley, Silcharโ, following approval by the state Cabinet.
The government issued the notification on August 21, with the new name taking effect immediately. The notification also specifies the departments that will operate from the administrative centre in Silchar.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said that 32 of the stateโs 59 departments would function from the Barak Valley Secretariat. The move is aimed at improving administrative access and strengthening governance and development initiatives in the region.
The Cabinet decision was announced by Sarma on August 18 following its meeting.
Sarma said the government had decided to give the administrative establishment in Barak Valley its new official identity as the Assam Secretariat, Barak Valley.
The Cabinet also approved standard operating procedures and guidelines for the functioning of various departments from the Silchar-based Secretariat.
The renaming represents a change in the administrative designation of the establishment and forms part of the Assam governmentโs broader efforts to decentralise administration and improve access to government services in the Barak Valley.
