Guwahati: Gauhati University on Friday launched its Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), aimed at strengthening multidisciplinary and skill-oriented teacher education in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta said the role of teachers is evolving with changes in the education system, teaching methods and the needs of learners.
He said teachers must nurture responsibility, values, ethics, humanity and creative thinking while preparing future generations. Mahanta also stressed the need for teachers to continuously update their knowledge, skills and perspectives to meet the demands of a changing education system.
The programme began with a welcome address by Purabi Baishya, Head of the Department of Education.
Jayanta Kumar Sharma, Director of Adult and Non-Formal Education, Government of Assam, and Member of the Eastern Regional Committee of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), spoke about the relevance of ITEP in strengthening teacher education.
He said the programme could make teacher preparation more integrated, contemporary and responsive to changing educational requirements.
The event was attended by Ranjan Kumar Kakati, Secretary of the University Classes; Dulumoni Goswami, Chairperson of ITEP; faculty members, parents and students.
The launch is in line with the NEP 2020’s focus on multidisciplinary and holistic teacher preparation. The programme is designed to strengthen teacher education in the region and provide training in professional skills, values and contemporary pedagogical perspectives.
