Guwahati: The Assam government has appointed 2020-batch IAS officer Aranyak Saikia as the new District Commissioner of Nagaon, succeeding Debashish Sharma, who has taken voluntary retirement from government service.

Saikia, who was serving as District Commissioner of Karbi Anglong, will take charge of the Nagaon district administration after about eight months in the post. He assumed charge in Karbi Anglong on December 25, 2025.

Sharmaโ€™s request for voluntary retirement was recently accepted by the state government, formally ending his tenure as Nagaon District Commissioner. He had reportedly applied for voluntary retirement under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme a few days earlier.

Sharma was appointed Nagaon District Commissioner as part of a major administrative reshuffle announced by the Assam government on December 24, 2025.

Saikiaโ€™s appointment comes amid heightened political activity in Nagaon ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election.
