Guwahati: Guwahati and nearby areas are likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and spells of heavy rain over the next 24 hours, according to a weather alert issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) under the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Guwahati, on Sunday, August 16.
The warning is in effect from 8.30 am on August 16 to 8.30 am on August 17. The RMC has forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across Guwahati and surrounding areas during this period.
Rainfall of up to 6 cm may be recorded in 24 hours, while isolated locations could receive heavy showers ranging from 7 cm to 11 cm.
The weather office has warned that intense rainfall could cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses, potentially slowing traffic and increasing travel time.
Heavy showers may also temporarily reduce visibility and disrupt electricity supply and civic services. Boat and ferry operations could be affected if weather conditions deteriorate.
Strong winds associated with thunderstorms may also lead to trees being uprooted. The RMC has further warned of a high likelihood of landslides, landslips and mudslides in vulnerable areas.
Residents, particularly those living in risk-prone locations, have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain. People have been urged to follow weather updates and traffic advisories and move to safe shelter when thunderstorms occur.
The weather department has also advised people to avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged areas and stay away from locations vulnerable to landslides, landslips and mudslides, as well as slippery roads.
